Our Beach Buddies practiced our number sense by pretending we had x-ray vision. Random numbers were covered up and students used their "x-ray" vision to tell me what the number was. After they identified the covered number they explained how they knew. For example if the covered number was 4, they explained that they knew it was 4 because the number is after 3 and before 5. Students then played this game with their partner.
Before and after are very confusing concepts. These two words often are switched and used interchangeably. The concept of before and after is great to practice at home. You can have your child draw or make a number line and ask them the following questions:
Can you point to the number that comes before 7?
What number comes after 6?
Can you point to 4? What number comes before 4? What number comes after 4?
You can also cover numbers and play x-ray vision.
