How long is your name?

Last week in math our focus was on measuring. The Beach Buddies:

  • compared lengths using ribbons
  • practiced our vocabulary longer than, shorter than, and the same.
  • measured different objects using cubes and recorded our findings.
  • measured our name using different units including paper clips, erasers, colored tiles, links, and cubes.
We are measuring experts!

X-ray vision

Our Beach Buddies practiced our number sense by pretending we had x-ray vision.  Random numbers were covered up and students used their "x-ray" vision to tell me what the number was.  After they identified the covered number they explained how they knew.  For example if the covered number was 4, they explained that they knew it was 4 because the number is after 3 and before 5.  Students then played this game with their partner.

Before and after are very confusing concepts.  These two words often are switched and used interchangeably. The concept of before and after is great to practice at home.  You can have your child draw or make a number line and ask them the following questions:

Can you point to the number that comes before 7?
What number comes after 6?
Can you point to 4? What number comes before 4? What number comes after 4?

You can also cover numbers and play x-ray vision.

The Way Objects Move

In science we are learning all about force, energy, and motion and how objects move.  We learned that objects can move in different ways including: zigzag, fast and slow, round and round, a straight line,  up and down, and back and forth.

Our Beach Buddies had fun experimenting with these movements!

Rough, Smooth, Shiny, Blue

Our Beach Buddies had fun taking turns describing the properties of different objects.  I was amazed at their vast vocabulary! Ask your Beach Buddy to describe an object at home!

Habit 6: Synergize

Habit 6 of the 7 Habits of Happy Kids is Synergize.  Although working together isn't the easiest skill at age 5 or 6, we think it is vital for our students to learn to get along with others and work well in groups.  We want our students to value the strengths of others and understand that by working together as a team, they can get more done and come up with more solutions.

TOGETHER is BETTER!

Helpers in Our Community

During our community helper unit we had some great helpers in our community come present to our kindergartners.

Mr. Detlefsen taught our students all about his job as a K-9 police officer and introduced us to Striker, his police dog.

Dr. Blatchley from Leander Chiropractic also paid us a visit, teaching us all about our bones and the importance of having great alignment.

Both community helpers spoke about why their job was important in the community, who they helped, the tools they use for their job, and the schooling and hard work it took to accomplish what they wanted to be.

Habit #2, Have a Plan!
